Navigating Acid Reflux Disease (GERD)
At AdventHealth, we treat lives interrupted by heartburn and GERD, also known as acid reflux disease.
Heartburn is associated with a burning sensation in the chest, usually behind the breastbone, that often occurs after eating and/or at night. The burning sensation is caused by stomach acid backing up into the esophagus.
While occasional heartburn is common and can affect anyone after a large meal or certain foods, frequent heartburn — occurring two or more times per week — may be a sign of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a chronic condition. Unlike occasional heartburn, GERD can lead to complications over time if left untreated, such as inflammation or damage to the esophagus. Fortunately, GERD is manageable and early treatment can help relieve symptoms and improve long-term digestive health.
Working with a dedicated care team, you’ll have a personalized plan built around your needs. It's time for long-lasting relief.
Finding a Fix for Your Reflux With Minimally Invasive Procedures
Treating your acid reflux now is a healthier step for your overall well-being than long-term medication use. We’ll map out a course of action based on your current health, medical history and specifics of your acid reflux diagnosis and explain each step along the way. With a wide range of minimally invasive surgical options, we’ll help you find the right solution.
- Fundoplication
-
This is the standard surgical method to address GERD. It involves wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the bottom of the esophagus and esophageal sphincter to reduce acid reflux.
- Hiatal Hernia Repair
-
Hiatal hernias can cause acid reflux and hiatal hernia repair may be your source of reflux relief.
- LINX Procedure
-
A LINX procedure involves placing a small, flexible ring of magnetic titanium beads around the lower part of the esophagus. This ring helps strengthen the esophagus and prevent reflux.
- Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF)
-
A TIF procedure is performed through the mouth, without any incisions. Using a special device, your doctor will create a small wrap where the esophagus meets the stomach to prevent acid from coming back up. Most people go home the same day, recover quickly and may even be able to stop taking daily acid-reducing medicines.
- Stretta Procedure
-
The Stretta procedure is an alternative to surgery for GERD. A thin tube is passed through the mouth to deliver gentle heat to the muscle where the esophagus meets the stomach. This helps strengthen the muscle so it can keep stomach acid from flowing back up.

If Your Heartburn Won't Quit, It Could Be More Than Reflux
Barrett’s esophagus is a condition that can develop after long-term acid reflux (GERD), where repeated acid exposure damages and changes the lining of the esophagus. This damage leads to changes in the esophageal cells, which may increase the risk of developing esophageal cancer.
